Instructions

    • 1

Apply a thin layer of frosting over the entire cake to create a basis for an evenly frosted cake. Chill the cake in the freezer to set this layer of frosting, called a crumb layer.

    • 2

Use an offset spatula to spread a layer of frosting on your cake. Work to make this layer quite smooth and even. Place the cake into the refrigerator for an hour or so, then remove. Take a foam roller and smooth the surface of the icing before starting to apply the sugar sheet to the cake.

    • 3

Hold each end of the printed cake photo sugar sheet. Scrape the back of the sheet across the sharp edge of a counter or table to remove the backing paper.

    • 4

Lay the sugar sheet onto the cake, pressing it gently from the middle outward to the edges.

    • 5

Place a tip onto a cake decorating bag, securing it with a coupler. Pipe frosting around the edges of your sugar sheet as desired to finish your cake.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use a hair dryer if necessary to help the backing release from the sugar sheet.

  • Experiment with making your own sugar sheets using edible inks and icing sheets in a standard home printer.
