How to Repair Permissions in XP Professional

Repairing permissions in Windows XP Professional is the act of setting all security permission triggers back to the default settings. This can be required where you have accidentally altered the security permissions to unfavorable settings and are unable to manually establish how to undo your changes. Fortunately, Microsoft came prepared for this eventuality, so you will be able to repair permissions with a simple command line edit.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the "Start" menu and press the "Run" button.

    • 2

Input "cmd" in the textbox that appears and press "Enter." A DOS window will appear onscreen.

    • 3

Type in the following command verbatim (cut and copy the command if need be to get it exactly right): "secedit /configure /cfg %windir%\repair\secsetup.inf /db secsetup.sdb /verbose" (without quotes). This will reset permissions, after which you will see a "Task is Complete" message displayed onscreen.
