How to Make a Cable Curtain Rod
Use a cable or wire curtain rod when you're trying to hang a longer-than-standard length of curtain or when you want the curtain rod to be almost invisible. A cable curtain rod can be hung very close to the ceiling and can run as long as you like. It also accommodates any kind of hanging device, from drapery hooks to grommets, and works very well with the premade "sleeve" that store-bought curtains often come with. It's a little tricky to hang and mount the cable rod, as it must be pulled very tightly. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- Cable, such as aircraft cable
- Turnbuckles
- Drill
- Pencil
- Anchors
- Wire rope clips
Instructions
-
-
1
Mark the two spots on either side of the wall or ceiling where you're planning to install the hooks.
-
2
Drill a hole into either one of the spots you marked in Step 1 and insert the anchor.
-
-
3
Screw the hooks into the anchors so they have a firm, tight grip on the wall or ceiling.
-
4
Make a loop in one end of the cable, and secure it to one of the hooks in the wall, closing it with several wire clamp clips.
-
5
Expand the turnbuckle all the way, and attach it to the hook on the other side of the wall.
-
6
Stretch the cable across to the turnbuckle, pulling it tightly, then cut it, leaving 6 extra inches.
-
7
Take the turnbuckle down from the wall and secure the cable through one end with a rope clip.
-
8
Return the turnbuckle, now attached to the cable, to the hook where you initially attached it.
-
9
Tighten the turnbuckle until the cable is rigid.
-
10
Remove the turnbuckle from the hook after you've achieved the desired degree of tension in the cable.
-
11
Trim the excess wire, slide your curtain panels on to the cable, and reattach the turnbuckle.
