How to Remove an Internet Explorer Add-On

Internet Explorer enables you to download add-ons. Add-ons are browser applications that improve your browser's performance or simplify the web experience. Add-ons include applications such as third-party toolbars, download managers and video players. IE also enables you to remove the add-ons that you are no longer using or ones that are causing errors such as display problems. Learn simple simple steps to remove your IE add-ons.

  • Disable the add-on you want to remove before uninstalling it. Launch Internet Explorer and click the "Tools" menu on the top. Click "Manage Add-ons" to launch the add-on management tool.

  • Click the "Toolbars and Extensions” button. You should see a list of the add-ons installed on your browser. Scroll down the list and click the add-on you want to remove, and click "Disable." Disable any other add-on you want to uninstall.

  • Click the "Start" menu on the desktop and select the "Control Panel." Click "Programs" and select "Programs and Features" to launch the installed programs list if you are using Windows Vista or 7. For Windows XP users, launch the installed programs list by double-clicking "Add or Remove Programs."

  • Scroll through the list of installed programs and click the add-on you want to remove. For example, click a third-party add-on such as the Google toolbar.

  • Click "Remove/Uninstall." When prompted, click "OK" or "Yes" to confirm and remove the add-on. If prompted, restart your browser. Repeats steps 4 and 5 to uninstall additional IE add-ons.
