Open a new file in Adobe Photoshop. Adobe Photoshop can be purchased at any computer software store, or online through the Adobe website. After the program has been installed on your computer, open a new file by clicking on the word "File" at the top of the screen, and select "New" from the drop down list. A small window will appear asking for the specific dimensions of the design. For a coffee mug, type in 8.31 inches for the height and 3 inches for the width. Fill in 300 DPI for the resolution, then click "OK." The new image is now ready to be customized.

Add text to your coffee mug design. Click on the "Text" tool, located inside the "Toolbox." The "Toolbox" is a narrow, vertical box that contains customization tools, and is located to the right side of the screen. The "Text" tool resembles a capital letter "T." Once selected, a marquee box can be dragged onto the image. Drag the marquee box, and click inside it to begin typing. To change the size, color, and style of your font, use the text customization tools at the top of the screen when the "Text" tool is selected.

Save your image design to your computer. Click on "File" at the top of your screen and select "Save As" from the drop down list. A small window will appear asking for the file name and file type. Type in a name for your file in the space provided, and save the file in JPEG format, then click "OK." The image file is now ready to be uploaded to a print-on-demand website, such as Zazzle.com or CafePress.com. At a print-on-demand website, you can upload your image, place your image onto the coffee mug, and order the quantity of coffee mugs you require.
