How to Wash Jelly Rolls for a Quilt
Fabric jelly rolls are long rolls of different fabrics that have been sewn together. Many people use them for quilts because they sew up easily to make quilt tops. You can buy jelly rolls can be purchased at most craft or sewing stores; they come in a variety of styles and color families. Although it is not recommended that put fabric jelly rolls in the washing machine, it is possible to hand-wash them.

Fill up a large sink or bathtub with cold water.

Put the mild detergent into the water. You can buy special hand-washing detergents at the store that work well in cold water.

Swish the water around to get the soap evenly distributed.

Unroll the jelly rolls and place them in the water.

Swirl the jelly roll fabric through the water, lightly agitating it with your hands.

Allow to soak about 15 to 20 minutes in the soapy water.

Drain the soapy water out of the sink or bathtub.

Rinse the fabric completely under running water, making sure to get all the soapy residue out of the material.

Squeeze excess water out of the fabric and lay it over a drying rack or on a towel to finish drying completely.

Iron the jelly roll before using it.

Tips & Warnings
Most people do not wash jelly rolls until after they have been used in the quilt. Jelly rolls unravel very easily during the washing process, and it is typically better to quilt it before washing the jelly rolls.
Never put the jelly roll in the washing machine. Because each side is a cut side, the fabric will unravel all the way down. Since they are only 2.5 inches wide to begin with, you won't be left with much fabric to actually use.
