How to Remove Husks From Wild Hazelnuts

Harvesting your own hazelnuts lets you introduce this heart-healthy source of vitamins into your diet. After shelling the nuts, you will encounter the husks, or skins. These prove difficult to remove, but roasting the hazelnuts both intensifies the flavor of the nut and allows for easier removal of the husks. Shell, roast and skin a large batch of hazelnuts at once and keep them on hand for adding to all of your favorite recipes.

    Things You'll Need

    • Wild hazelnuts
    • Nut cracker
    • 2 baking pans
    • Cooling rack
    • Towel
      • 1

Shell the hazelnuts with a nutcracker by placing the nut between the "teeth" of the cracker and closing to crack the shell. Pull the shell from the nut off with your hands.

      • 2

Heat the oven to 275 degrees F.

      • 3

Spread out the shelled wild hazelnuts in a single layer on a baking sheet.

      • 4

Bake for 15 to 20 minutes at 275 degrees F.

      • 5

Remove the baking pan from the oven and place the cooling rack across the top of the second baking pan.

      • 6

Carefully pour the still hot hazelnuts onto the cooling rack.

      • 7

Rub a towel over the warm nuts to push them back and forth over the grates on the cooling rack to release their skins (husks) to the baking pan below.

      • 8

Alternatively, place several hot hazelnuts into a dry towel and rub them vigorously until the husks come off.
