How to Fix Windows Control Panel

Save

The Control Panel functions as the Windows command center: all of the preferences and settings for the operating system are managed through the it. In certain situations, problems can arise with the Control Panel that keep it from opening or working properly. With a few tweaks to the Windows registry, you can restore your Control Panel to its default settings and remove any outstanding issues. Dealing with the registry can be a bit daunting, but by carefully going through several simple steps, fixing the Control Panel can be a manageable task.

  • Click "Start" and then "Run." Type "regedit." A window will open with six options.

  • Click the option "HKEY_CURRENT_USER" among the six options. More so-called child keys will open.

  • Click the following option: "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer." This will open a Windows Explorer window with multiple options.

  • Locate the values "NoControlPanel" and "NoRestriction." Select both of the files and delete them.

  • Close any open windows and reboot your computer.

  • Click "Start" and then "Control Panel" to confirm that it is working.

Tips & Warnings

  • Always be careful when working with the Window's registry (and deleting any of its files) as the files it contains are important to the Windows operating system.
