How to Make Faces on a BlackBerry Messenger

"BlackBerry Messenger" is a free instant messenger application provided by BlackBerry. Most BlackBerry smartphones come with "BlackBerry Messenger" pre-installed. If your BlackBerry does not have BlackBerry Messenger pre-installed, "BlackBerry notes you can download the application through your BlackBerry browser or through BlackBerry App World." You can use "BlackBerry Messenger" to communicate with other BlackBerry users. You can add smiley faces (emoticons) to personalize your conversations.

  • "BlackBerry Messenger" installed on your BlackBerry device
  • A "BlackBerry Messenger" contact
  • An active data plan on your BlackBerry device

      Press the BlackBerry button to the left of the call button on device.

      Select and open the blue and white chat bubble "BlackBerry Messenger" icon. Your contact list will be displayed. Your current conversations (most recent "BlackBerry Messenger" texts) will be listed first, followed by your contact list, and any pending contacts.

      Open a "conversation" or select someone from your list of "Contacts". A chat window will appear with a blue rectangle at the bottom of the screen where you can enter text using your QWERTY keyboard and enter smiley faces.

      Press the "Alt" button on your keyboard and press the colon icon, located on the "H" key. Press the "Alt" button again and select the end parenthesis, located on the "Y" key. Press the space bar and a smiling face will appear on your screen. Press the "BlackBerry" button and select "Send" to send your smiley face. You can send both text and emoticons in a message at the same time by typing your message and then making a smiley face.

Tips & Warnings

  • Most smiley faces start by using the colon symbol (for the eyes) and another symbol to distinguish the type of face you want to make. To see a full list of the smiley faces and other icons, press the "Symbol" button to the right of the "space bar" twice to list the available smiley faces and alternate icons.
