How to Disable Anti-Spyware & Anti-Virus

Save

Although anti-spyware and anti-virus software are intended to protect your computer from advertisement pop-ups, slow performance and security threats, they can prevent some of your computer programs from running properly. This is especially true for anti-spyware software. This is why you may chose to disable them. If you disable either your anti-spyware and anti-virus software, take into consideration that you are making your computer more vulnerable to security threats like viruses, worms and trojan horses.

Disabling Anti-Spyware

  • Open the anti-spyware program on your computer. Sometimes there is an icon for the software located either on the desktop or in the toolbar on the lower right-hand corner of the computer, next to the clock. Double-click to open the software if it's on your desktop. Right-click on the icon if it's in the toolbar.

  • Turn off the anti-spyware software by removing the check mark from the "on" button. If you have Ad-Watch Anti-Spyware, you will need to uncheck the word "active" and "automatic" to disable the software. If you are running SpyBot Tea Timer, click on "advanced mode" and then uncheck the teatimer.

  • Click "yes" for the anti-spyware software to be disabled.

Disabling Anti-Virus

  • Double-click on the anti-virus program icon running on your computer. It is usually located directly on your desktop or in your start menu. Click "start" in the bottom left-hand corner to access programs not listed on your desktop.

  • Right-click on the icon and click "disable" or "stop" to turn off the anti-virus software.

  • Click "yes" for the changes to take effect.

Tips & Warnings

  • To enable the software so it is working again, repeat the steps mentioned above per software and click on "enable" or "start" to turn it back on.
  • While the anti-spyware or anti-virus software is turned off, be leary of entering your private information like address, phone number, social security number, and bank or credit card information as this information may be accessible to others using the Internet. Also, avoid downloading anything as a virus may be attached to the file which could harm your computer. Wait until you turn both programs back on before doing either of the above.
