AVI is a standard video file type that is compatible with many programs, including media players and video-editing software. If you want to play an AVI on your TV, you can do so using a couple of different methods. While most people are probably familiar with the process of burning a digital video to DVD, it is also possible to connect the computer to the TV and play digital video files directly.
Things You'll Need
- Blank DVD or CD
- DVD software
- S-Video cable or VGA cable
- Mini-jack to left and right channel audio cable
Burn to DVD
Insert a blank DVD or blank CD into the DVD-writing drive of your computer. Open any DVD software. Select "DVD" or "Video CD" as the type of disc to burn in the software, based upon the type of disc you are burning.
Upload the AVI file into the DVD program using the “Add Video” or “Import” button. The program automatically converts the file to a DVD ISO image file during the burning process.
Go to the final page of the DVD software wizard and click the “Burn” or “Write” button. Wait for the AVI to burn to the DVD or video CD.
Put the DVD into the DVD player and play as you would a standard DVD. The AVI file stored on the disc will appear on the screen.
Connect Computer to TV
Determine which type of video cable is needed for your computer to TV connection. The connection can be made using different video cables, depending upon the video ports on your computer and TV. One type of video connection device is an S-Video cable.
Insert the end of the video cable into the video port on your computer and the other end into the corresponding port on the TV. Plug the mini-jack end of the audio cable into the audio output port on the computer and the left and right channel plugs into the audio-in inputs on the TV.
Use the “Input” button on the TV or remote control to switch the TV’s input to the proper port. Don’t worry if the image from your computer does not appear immediately on the screen.
Right-click on the desktop of your computer and select “Properties” from the menu that comes up. Go to the “Settings” tab and click “Advanced.” Click on the “Menu” tab or “S-Video Output” feature. Each graphics adapter is set up differently, but once you locate the settings of your S-Video output setup, set the TV screen as the primary monitor.
Change the resolution on your computer to get the best picture on your TV. Go to the “Start” menu of your computer and “Control Panel,” then select “Display” and “Settings.” Use a resolution between 640x480 and 800x600. Now the media file can be opened in a media player, such as Windows Media Player, and will play on the TV screen.
Tips & Warnings
- The S-Video cord can be replaced by whatever type of video port you have on your computer and television. If you have a 15-pin VGA port, for instance, you can use a 15-pin VGA to S-Video cable.
