How to Convert a 24 Pin Cable to USB

Save

Computer peripherals require a number of different kinds of cables to connect, and the technology in the cable connections has changed almost as much as the technology in the computers themselves. One of the most popular technologies right now is USB, which is used to connect most new model hard drives and other portable computer equipment to a computer. However, some people may still have parts that they use which require the older 24 pin connection. Luckily, converting to a USB cable is very easy to do.

  • Determine if the connector that you will be converting from is a male or female connector. A female connector will look like it has a piece of plastic inside of it with 24 holes punched into it, whereas the male connector will be empty inside with 24 metal pins sticking up out of it. If the connector is male, then you will need a female wire; if the connector is female, then you will need a male wire.

  • Use a cable that has a 24 pin connection on one side and a USB connection on the other. They will come in various sizes (1-ft, 3-ft or 5-ft), which refers to their length.

  • Plug the 24 pin side of the cable into your 24 pin connector, and plug the USB side into the USB port of your computer. Then turn on your computer and allow your operating system to recognize the new hardware.
