How to Configure a Westell Wirespeed Modem

Save

When you subscribe to high-speed Internet service, Internet service providers such as Bellsouth, Verizon and AT&T will provide you with a Westell Wirespeed Modem to access the Internet. While the ISP will likely provide the option for a field tech to be dispatched to your home to configure your broadband modem, a fee is generally involved for the dispatch. Save yourself setup fees by configuring the modem yourself.

Things You'll Need

  • Ethernet adapter
  • Ethernet cable
  • Telephone cable
  • DSL filters
  • Westell Wirespeed modem
  • Software CD
  • Ensure that your computer has an Ethernet adapter installed. To determine this, open the Device Manager from your computer's Control Panel. The Ethernet adapter will be listed in the "Adapters" section. You can purchase Ethernet adapters from your local computer/electronics retailer.

  • Take one end of the Ethernet cable that came with your Westell modem and insert it into the Ethernet port on the back of your modem. Connect the other end of the Ethernet cable to the Ethernet port that is on your computer.

  • Connect one end of your telephone cable into the "Line" port of the Westell Modem. Connect the other end of the telephone cable into your wall's telephone jack.

  • Place "DSL Filters" on all of the telephone cables in the home that are being used. Do not place a filter on the telephone cable that is connecting the Westell modem to the DSL telephone jack. If your Westell modem kit did not include DSL filters, you can contact your ISP and request filters. You can also purchase filters from your local computer store.

  • Connect the black power cord to the back of the Westell modem. Plug the other end of the power cord into the nearest electrical outlet.

  • Press the power switch on the back of your Westell Wirespeed modem to turn it on. Wait for the "Power," "Ready," and "Link" lights to synchronize on the modem. The lights should be green.

  • Take the software CD that came with your Westell modem and insert it into the CD-ROM drive of your computer. Agree to the license agreement.

  • Select the option to "Setup PC Only." Click "Next."

  • Select the location on your computer that you want the software to install. Click "Next."

  • Select your Ethernet card that is being used for the high-speed connection. Click "Next."

  • Reboot your computer.

  • Open your Internet browser to begin browsing the Internet. As you browse the Internet, the "Activity" light will start flashing yellow to indicate data is being transmitted.

Tips & Warnings

  • Customize your modem settings, such as the username, password, WAP and firewall by typing "192.168.0.1" into the address bar of your browser.
