How to Install Wireless With Embarq Internet
Embarq Internet and CenturyTel have merged to become CenturyLink. CenturyLink's high-speed Internet service requires a special modem that's provided by the company; a standard modem doesn't allow wireless Internet access. A CenturyLink technician must come to your home and install a wireless router/modem combination package for wireless access, which will cost you additional fees. If you don't want to pay a monthly fee to CenturyLink for wireless services, you can still set up a wireless connection. However, you still need to be a subscriber to CenturyLink's high-speed Internet services.

1
Purchase a wireless router from your local computer retailer or electronics store. Compare routers and choose the one that's right for you. For example, check to see if the router has a built-in firewall, WAP encryption abilities and desired speeds.
-
2
Power off your computer and CenturyLink DSL modem.
-
-
3
Locate the Ethernet cable that's connected from the "Ethernet" port of your DSL modem to your computer. Unplug the end of the Ethernet cable that's connected to the back of your computer; don't unplug the end that's connected to your DSL modem.
-
4
Plug the loose end of the Ethernet cable into the "Internet," "WAN" or "WLAN" port that's on your wireless router (the exact wording will vary by router model). Your DSL modem and wireless router should now be connected by the Ethernet cable.
-
5
Locate the network cable that came with your wireless router. Plug one end of the network cable into a numbered port on the back of your router; plug the other end of the network cable into the "Internet" or "LAN" port on the back of your computer.
-
6
Locate the telephone cable that's connected from the CenturyLink DSL modem to the telephone jack. Disconnect the telephone cable from the back of the CenturyLink modem. Insert the telephone cable into the "ADSL" port that's on your router.
-
7
Power on your DSL modem. Wait for the lights to sync. Power on your wireless router and computer.
-
8
Launch an Internet browser on your computer. Type the router's IP address into the browser's address bar. If you don't know the router's IP address, you can find it in the instruction manual that came with your router.
-
9
Enter your username and password to begin configuring your wireless settings. Generally, your wireless router will be assigned a default username and password; you can find the username and password in your instruction manual.
-
10
Configure the router's wireless settings, such as the security level, broadcasting channel, and administrator's username and password.
-
11
Begin browsing the Internet using your wireless service. To access the wireless service using a secondary computer, the computer must have a wireless Ethernet card installed on it. Most laptops now come equipped with a wireless Ethernet card. However, if you don't have one, you can purchase one from your local computer retailer.
