  1. How to condition and clean your toupee

    • 1

Comb the toupee with your fingers. The fingers are safer on the hairpiece than a comb, and the natural oils from your hands keep human hair soft and shiny. Hairpieces tend to dull more quickly than permanent hair because they aren't conditioned naturally with the oils from the scalp.

    • 2

Use the sheen and feel of your hairpiece as a guideline for when to clean it. Your hairpiece usually can be worn for a week or so between cleanings, but air pollution and weather can cause dullness. Use a mild cleanser---ideally a shampoo made for your type of wig (whether synthetic or human hair)---and let it air dry. Blow dryers and other heating elements may cause permanent harm and make your hairpiece look dull.

    • 3

Use a two-in one shampoo/conditioner that is made for your type of wig. If the hair on your toupee is extremely dry, look for leave-in conditioners or products with labels such as "deep conditioning leave-in treatment for wigs." Overconditioning can leave a wig flat and dull, so use your own sense to determine whether the toupee has lost enough sheen to need conditioner.

    • 4

Store your wig in fresh air in order to keep the hair shiny and soft. Either leave your toupee on a wig stand that has air openings or use wig clips to hang it.

Tips & Warnings

  • Follow directions on the conditioner bottle. Some conditioners are meant to be left on the wig, and others are to be rinsed out.
