How to Connect a Sewer Hose to an RV

RV sanitation systems typically include a black-water tank and a gray-water tank. The black-water tank collects waste from the toilet. The gray-water tank collects used water from the kitchen sink, bathroom sink and shower. Connect a sewer hose to your RV to empty both of these tanks as needed, according to your RV monitor panel.

Things You'll Need

  • Sewer hose
  • Sewer hose support (optional)

Instructions

  1. Attach the Sewer Hose

    • 1

Close both the black- and gray-water valves.

    • 2

Place the sewer hose support between the RV and the ground sewer connection.

    • 3

Attach the sewer hose coupler to the waste water outlet on the RV. Tighten firmly.

    • 4

Lay the sewer hose on top of the sewer hose support to avoid ground contact.

    • 5

Remove the ground sewer connection cover.

    • 6

Place the elbow end of the sewer hose over the ground sewer connection. Press the elbow end of the sewer hose firmly into the ground to ensure a proper seal.

    Flush the Tanks

    • 7

      Open the black-water valve.

    • 8

Power on the waste water pump to flush the contents of the black water tank.

    • 9

Power off the waste water pump when the black-water tank is empty.

    • 10

      Close the black-water valve.

    • 11

      Open the gray-water valve.

    • 12

Power on the waste water pump to flush the contents of the gray water tank.

    • 13

Power off the waste water pump when the gray-water tank is empty.

    • 14

      Close the gray-water valve.

    • 15

Replace the ground sewer connection cover.

Tips & Warnings

  • Dump the black- and gray-water tanks after both are two-thirds full so the weight of the contents helps flush the tanks.

  • Avoid dragging the sewer hose along the ground to prevent damage to the hose.

  • Wear disposable gloves when flushing the tanks.

  • Use only heavy-duty hoses designed for sewage use.
