Take a staycation. Our lagging economy has encouraged many to take staycations, mini-vacations that are in the same city. Play the tourist and get to know your town. Discover hidden pockets of fun and excitement you've never really paid attention to. For example, if you live in the Washington, D.C., area, stay a weekend in Old Town Alexandria or Georgetown. In Dallas/Fort Worth, Six Flags Over Texas and the Fort Worth Stockyards are fun places to discover. In San Diego, the area around beautiful Balboa Park and Sea World is a great place for a staycation; and if you have the money, a stay at the historic Hotel del Coronado.

Exercise. Studies have shown that frequent physical activity is not only good for the body, it also releases good-feeling endorphins. Head to your local gym, buy home exercise equipment, or take a hike in your local park.

    • 3

Take up a hobby. Find your area of interest and create a hobby out of it. The possibilities are endless -- woodworking, writing, sewing, needlepoint, painting, and pottery are just a few. Or learn to play a musical instrument or set out to learn a foreign language. Hobbies give you a sense of accomplishment while bringing more excitement into your life.

Bake cookies. It may sound silly, but there's a certain comfort in baking a lip-smacking batch of home baked cookies. Don't cook from a mix; instead, use fresh ingredients for your chocolate chip, oatmeal raisin or sugar cookies. It's easier than you think and requires only basic ingredients.

Add accents to your rooms. Decorative accents such as pillows and rugs can add excitement in your home. Also change out pictures and wall hangings periodically, and change the theme of the room.

    • 6

Do your holiday shopping early. Christmas shopping is fun and gives you something to look forward to.

    • 7

Use chopsticks. When you order Chinese food to take out or dine in, put down that fork. Learn how to use chopsticks to eat your meals.

    • 8

Surround yourself with plants. Buy one plant a month and decorate your balcony, living area or deck with interesting greenery. Palms are always cheery, and spider plants and pothos are very easy to care for. Be sure to use decorative planter pots such as stained glass, painted or cut glass.

Tips & Warnings

  • Getting a hobby adds fun and excitement to your life, and gives you a sense of accomplishment. Use your creations as gifts for friends and family.
