How to Start a Coin Laundromat & Carwash Business
Starting your own car wash or laundromat service can be a lucrative business move, but it comes with high investments that could potentially be risky. According to Entrepreneur.com, the good news to owning a wash-n-go business is that it has future growth possibilities. Many households are growing in size, and becoming more dependent on convenient and affordable services. The downside is that the wash-n-go industry is a mature market, or one which fluctuates based on population and competition trends. Investors need to constantly educate themselves in ways to maximize their profits by offering more innovative and convenient services.

1
Invest enough money to be able to fund your business. Ideally, investments should add up to $200,000 to $500,000 for an average-size laundromat or car wash service. This not only includes the mortgage/rent, but monthly utility bills, possible renovations and construction work, staff/support expenses, property and business fees, and service equipment. Keep in mind that average operation costs make up at least 50 percent of the business's annual gross income. To have a successful car wash or laundromat service, try not exceed monthly lease payments of 15 to 20 percent of your expected income.

2
Attend professional business training seminars/classes. Many business owners come from diverse career backgrounds and therefore, experience or formal business education is preferred, not necessary. Enlist a business partner or experienced mentor to help you through the ins and outs of operating a car wash or laundromat. Obtain any necessary business permits and certification before making a business investment.

Set up at least 1 to 2 vacuums per car bay, strategically placing them in areas that will not obstruct traffic flow. Include self-serve wash options, bill changers, vending machines, and cleaning supplies. For safety and code reasons, every car wash needs an above-head tube heater and floor heating system to prevent any liabilities and to provide better customer service.

For the laundromat service, expect to pay at least $500 to $10,000 per washer and dryer (all depends on size, type and brand). You also will need to invest in a water heating system and necessary laundry equipment like carts, cleaning equipment, and laundry supplies. Although optional, investing in vending machines and special customer amenities (like televisions, snack bars, and other forms of entertainment) is important to the success of your business.

5
Select a good lot location that is conducive to high traffic for a car wash and a sizable building for a laundromat service. For the car wash, your business should be between 100' to 120' deep and 75' wide (and that depends on the number of bays) and must be roomy enough to allow traffic to flow in and out. Laundromats should be large enough to hold several pieces of washing machinery and parking lots should be large enough to hold several vehicles.

Choose a location that will generate a sizable amount of traffic to your business. Car washes and laundromats are most successful in residential areas, near homes and apartment complexes.
