How to Delete a Payment in QuickBooks

In the course of doing business, sometimes payments are recorded incorrectly or applied to the wrong deposit. If this happens and you have already entered the payment into your QuickBooks account register, it can be fixed in just a few steps. QuickBooks will allow you to modify already completed deposits as well as payments listed as not yet deposited. With a few clicks, your account register will be up-to-date and accurate.

Instructions

    • 1

Click the Banking menu in your QuickBooks application window. Click "Make Deposits" to enter the deposit management screen.

    • 2

Highlight the payment you want to remove. Click "Edit" in the menu bar and select "Delete Line." This removes the payment from the deposit. If the deposit was already made, this will place the payment into "Undeposited Funds."

    • 3

Click "Save." This will record the deposit without the payment you have just removed.

    • 4

Click the payment listed in "Undeposited Funds," click "Edit" in the menu bar and select "Delete Line." This will remove the payment completely. If you wanted to remove it from the deposit only, skip this step.

Tips & Warnings

  • Removing the payment from a completed deposit will alter your account register. Be sure to go back and verify your ledger balances when complete.
