How to Measure a Flat Screen Monitor

Save

For someone in the market for a new computer monitor, size is of the essence. If you are using your PC for something as simple as browsing the Internet and typing papers, you likely don't need a massive monitor. However, if you work with computers for a living or want to use your PC for entertainment and need the extra space, monitor size is important. Understanding how monitor size is determined is crucial when shopping for your next LCD, or flat screen display.

Things You'll Need

  • Measuring tape
  • Notepad
  • Pen
  • Find a display model at an electronics store, or search online for the measurements of the monitor you are considering.

  • Measure the screen of the monitor using the measuring tape, taking it diagonally from the bottom left corner of the screen to the top right corner. Be careful not to touch the screen with the measuring tape; you could damage or scratch it. This can also be done from the top left corner to the bottom right corner. Monitor size is typically measured in inches.

  • Note the size and name of the monitor screen in your notepad.

  • Measure horizontally from the bottom left corner of the screen to the bottom right corner of the screen to determine the viewable image size (or VIS). This can also be done using the top corners of the screen. Again, be careful not to touch the screen with the measuring tape.

  • Note the VIS size of the monitor screen in your notepad.

  • Use the information gathered to compare monitor sizes and determine what is best for you and your home. Larger monitors tend to run higher in price than smaller monitors. Other aspects to consider are screen resolution and the inputs available on the monitor (e.g. HDMI, S-Video, VGA).
