How to Convert WMV to JPG Video

WMVs are standard videos for Windows users, while JPGs are still images. It is possible to convert WMV to JPG video by compressing each frame to a JPG and playing it in sequence. JPG video is also known as a MJPEG, or a Moving JPEG. Converting a WMV to a MJPEG requires a powerful video player and transcoder, such as VLC Media Player. VLC is free for download and is capable of converting to and from several different file types, including to Moving JPEGs. Note that converting video may result in loss of video quality.

Things You'll Need

  • VLC Media Player

PC Conversion

  • Download and install VLC from the website videolan.org. Agree to the licensing terms. Open VLC.

  • Click "Media" at the top of the VLC screen. Select "Open File." Locate your video and open it in VLC.

  • Click "Media" and select "Convert/Save" to bring you to the input format screen. If your file is not already selected, find it using the menu on the left side of the screen. Click "Convert/Save."

  • Click the box next to "File" in the "Stream Output" window. Click the arrow next to "Custom" on the right side of the screen. Select "MJPEG."

  • Rename your file, if desired. Choose your output destination. Click "Save."

Mac Conversion

  • Download VLC. Agree to the terms of use, install and open.

  • Click "File" and select "Open File...". Click on the "Browse" icon and locate your file. Click "OK" to open your WMV in its own player window.

  • Click "File" and select "Streaming/Exporting Wizard."

  • Select "Transcode/Save to File." Click "Next."

  • Click "Existing Playlist Item" and select your WMV in the menu window. Click "Next."

  • Enable "Transcode Video." Select "MJPEG" as your Codec. Enable "Transcode Audio." Select your desired audio format. Click "Next."

  • Choose your "Encapsulation Format." VLC will automatically choose one for you. Click "Next."

  • Click "Choose..." to choose your output file destination. Click "Next."

  • Review your summary screen. Click "Back" if needed. Click "Finish."
