How to Sew Leg Warmers for Children
People are always looking for new and inexpensive ways to keep warm throughout the long winter months. One way to help children stay cozy throughout the harsh winter days is by providing them with a pair or two of homemade leg warmers. Sewing a pair of leg warmers is an inexpensive project that can be completed within a relatively short amount of time, and the project is simple enough for even the novice seamstress to successfully complete.

1
Measure the length of the child's leg from just below the knee to the ankle. Add an additional 4 to 6 inches to the length of the required material to accommodate the cuffs of the leg warmers as well as to allow for bunching of the material when worn.
-
2
Measure around the child's leg where the legwarmers will be worn, typically just below the knee. Add 1 inch to the width of the material needed to allow for the seam along the inside of the leg warmers.

3
Cut two pieces of material using sharp material scissors that are the predetermined length and width of the leg warmers to be created for the child's legs.
-
4
Fold the material in half so the edges of the length of the material are together. The backside of the material should be exposed. Sew the edges of the material together, allowing for a 1/2 inch of excess material on the outside of the seam. This material will be hidden when the leg warmers are turned right side out.
-
5
Turn the leg warmer right side out. Fold the unfinished top and bottom of the leg warmer so that a 1 inch cuff is created at each end and pin with straight pins.
-
6
Stitch the cuffs of the leg warmers by hand using a needle and matching thread. Leave a 1-inch hole in the seam of each of the cuffs.
-
7
Cut a piece of elastic that is 1 inch shorter than the width of the child's leg just below the knee. Thread this piece of elastic through the top cuff of the leg warmer and stitch the two ends of the elastic piece together. Repeat this process for the bottom cuff which will rest at the child's ankle.
-
8
Sew the remainder of the seam for each of the cuffs of the leg warmers.
