How to Add a File Location to a Word Document

If you have folders filled with Word 2010 documents on your computer or if you share Word 2010 files on a network with several other users, it can be next to impossible to find the specific document you need if you do not know precisely where to look. You can remedy this problem by adding the file path of the document, which shows its location on your computer or your network, to the header or footer of the Word file.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the Word 2010 document to which you want to add the file location.

    • 2

Click the "Insert" tab above the ribbon. Click "Header" to add the file location to the header of the document or click "Footer" to add the file location to the footer. Select "Edit Header" or "Edit Footer" from the drop-down menu that appears.

    • 3

Click the "Insert" tab. Select "Quick Parts" in the Text group. Click "Field."

    • 4

Select "FileName" in the "Field Names" list. Click to select the "Add Path to File Name" check box option and click "OK."

    • 5

Save the document with the name and in the location you want to use.

    • 6

Right-click the file location field in the header or footer. Select "Update Field" to see the file location in the header or footer.

This is GREAT ! Thank you very much. Since you can insert file location, without actually knowing what it is, surely there is a way to SEE it, on an open document, without going through all these steps ? I have been wanting to know how to do that for a long time ! I have Word 2007.
