How to Delete Zip Files

A zip file is one file that contains many other files that have been compressed. Zip files come in handy when you wish to transfer numerous similar files at once, such as music files on one CD or a software program. You may want to delete an entire zip file if you're done with the contents inside of the file, or you may wish to delete just parts of the zip file. The methods for doing both are very similar.

Full File Removal

  • Shut down the program or application that may be using any files associated with the zip file.

  • Open the folder that contains the zip file you want to delete.

  • Click on the file and press the “Delete” key. A window will appear and you will be asked to confirm.

  • Click “Yes” in the open window, and the zip file will be deleted.

Remove Selected Files

  • Shut down the program or application that may be using a file or files associated with the larger zip file.

  • Open the folder that has the unzipped folder on your computer.

  • Scroll through the files listed in the unzipped folder and highlight the file or files you wish to remove from the folder.

  • Press “Delete” on the keyboard. A window will open.

  • Click “Yes” in the window and the file or files will be deleted.

Tips & Warnings

  • Remember that, as with other files, the recycle bin must be emptied for the zip files to be fully deleted.
