How to Troubleshoot a Copier Code Wrench
Modern copiers are really computers with on-board printers. They have hard drives, motherboards and central processing units just as with your desktop computer. The copier monitors its functions, and when an error is detected, the machine stops the copy process and displays a message. If the error is severe, the copier--depending on the brand and model--will display a trouble or error code along with a wrench symbol. This trouble code and wrench alert you to the fact that a severe error has occurred that might be more difficult to diagnose than an ordinary paper jam.

1
Note the trouble code that appears in the display with the wrench, then follow any instructions on the control panel for clearing the error. Consult the copier's operation manual to see if the manufacturer has provided instructions for recovering from that specific error code.
-
2
Open the access doors to remove copy paper left inside the machine when the copy cycle was interrupted. Open all the doors regardless of whether the machine detects paper in that location. Close all the doors with gentle firmness to be certain they are all closed and latched.
-
-
3
Observe the copier. Allow the copier to recover and come to a ready state if it appears the code has been reset.
-
4
Power down the copier if the code does not reset. Unplug the copier from the wall outlet, then wait three minutes before plugging it back in.
-
5
Power on the copier. Watch the copier and listen as it recovers. Note any unusual noises or lights flashing on the control panel while it warms up and prepares to come to ready.
-
6
Resume copier operation if the copier comes to a ready state. Note the error code that appears if the wrench reappears.
-
7
Call an authorized service center to request service if the trouble code reappears. Give the customer support representative the code(s) that you noted in steps 1 and 4 as well as any additional information he may ask you regarding your observations of copier operation before and after the error code appeared.

Tips & Warnings
If the trouble code is one that the end user (you) can resolve, instructions will be given in the operator's manual for what to do to resolve the issue. If clearing the error, powering down and unplugging the machine doesn't resolve your problem, call for service.
Do not open the covers of the copier beyond the access panels that are available to the operator. High voltage and high heat can be present inside the copier. Without proper training, touching internal components of the machine can be dangerous.
