How to Hook Up Tow Rope for Skiers

Save

Water skiing is a popular recreational activity enjoyed by many people. Before heading out on the water it is important to make sure that the ski rope is properly attached to the tow ring at the rear of the boat. Carefully inspecting and securely attaching the rope to the ski tow hook of the boat is necessary not only to ensure proper operation, but also for overall safety.

Things You'll Need

  • Boat with ski set-up (tow ring)
  • Ski rope
  • Inspect the ski ring as well as the ski tow rope. Make sure the tow ring is securely attached to the boat and does not show signs of weakness or being loose. Carefully inspect the ski rope itself looking for frays in the nylon, any excessive wear spots, and other signs of weakening.

  • Locate the loop in the end of the ski tow rope. This will typically be a factory formed loop. Inspect the loop once again, looking for weakness in the nylon rope.

  • Attach the ski tow rope to the tow ring located at the rear of the boat. The tow ring on many newer boats will consist of a post-mounted ring with a slightly off-set keeper hook or anchor point.

  • Slip the loop over the entire tow ring including the post. Grasp the front of the loop which will allow both sides of the loop to be held at the same time.

  • Pull the tip of the loop back up to the tow ring and feed it through the ring from the boat side. Pass the tip of the loop over and down on the anchor point or keeper hook. While holding the tip of the loop against the hook, pull the rope and the loop taut against the tow ring.

Tips & Warnings

  • Make sure the rope is securely anchored prior to use and check often during use.
