How to Add a TTF in Photoshop

Save

TTF stands for TrueType font. It is a font format that was developed by the Apple Computer company in 1997. It is used as a standard on most Microsoft Windows operating systems. When you are working in Photoshop, there may be instances where a brand new font will work better with your design than your existing choice. You must add the new font file to either your Windows font or Adobe folder.

Things You'll Need

  • TrueType font file

Regular Font Folder

  • Save (or extract if it is inside of a compressed folder) the TrueType font to your desktop or another location that is easy to reference.

  • Click \"Run\" on the Start Menu and type in \"fonts\" (no quotation marks). Your \"Fonts\" folder will appear.

  • Click \"File\" then \"Install New Font.\" Choose the drive where the new TrueType font file is located, browse the \"Folders\" section to find the file, and then hit \"OK\" to install the file to the folder. You might also be able to simply copy and paste or drag and drop the font file from your desktop to the \"Fonts\" folder.

  • Click \"View\" then \"Refresh\" on the \"Fonts\" folder menu. Restart your computer to assure that the new font is recognized by your system.

  • Open Photoshop to assure that the TrueType font appears in your list of text options on the \"Character\" window. If it does not, try the method in section two below.

Photoshop Font Folder

  • Close the Photoshop program. The font will not appear in the Photoshop program if you leave it open.

  • Open Windows Explorer (right-click the \"Start\" button and select \"Explore\").

  • Navigate to Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Fonts on your hard drive. You can also perform a search for the word \"font\" in Windows Explorer to find the Adobe font folder.

  • Copy and paste or drag and drop the new font from your desktop or other location to this folder. Click \"View\" then \"Refresh\" on the file folder menu.

  • Restart your computer and then load Photoshop once again to find the new TrueType font under your text options.

Tips & Warnings

  • These instructions apply to Windows 2000 and later users.
  • Scan each new compressed folder or TTF font file with your virus program before you attempt to install it on your system.
