How to Get Into BIOS on an IBM Thinkpad T42

Save

The IBM ThinkPad T42 is a member of the T40 series of laptops manufactured by IBM in the early 2000s. While the T42 is delivered with preset BIOS settings, there are times when you may need to tweak them yourself. For example, you can set a BIOS password that will prevent your laptop from booting or you can change the default sleep time for some of the components. Accessing the BIOS may be accomplished using two different methods.

The Direct Method

  • Shut down your computer.

  • Turn your computer back on and press the "F1" key when you see the IBM logo splash screen.

  • Make the changes to the BIOS and press "F10" to save and exit. The computer will restart automatically with the new settings.

The Indirect Route

  • Turn off your machine.

  • Press the power button and press the blue "AccessIBM" button at the top of your keyboard when you see the IBM logo screen.

  • Allow "Rescue and Recovery" to load.

  • Scroll down the text links on the left side of the screen and click "Access the BIOS."

  • Click on "Yes" and allow the machine to reboot into the BIOS.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can also press the blue "AccessIBM" button a second time during boot-up and choose "Access the BIOS" from the options given on the utility screen.
  • When making changes to the BIOS of any computer, it is always best to change one thing at a time. Reboot and make sure the computer acts the way you expect, then change the next value and repeat.
