Want to lift your jeep but don't have the cash for an expensive lift kit ? Well here are some tips and tricks that will allow you to lift your jeep on a budget , This article is intended for jeep yj ' s and earlier models, but some things will work for newer models as well.
Things You'll Need
- basic tools
The simplest way to lift your jeep is to just add larger tires, a jeep YJ can fit up to 31 x 10.5 tires on stock rims without any lift at all. If your leaf springs are old and sagging you may expirience some tire rub though. Tires can be expensive but if you shop around on ebay and craigslist you can find some great deals on used tires. Aslo check your local junk yards as well.
If your jeep has leaf spring suspension front and back ( jeep YJ and earlier ) You can gain some lift by using larger shackles , larger shackles can be purchased inexpensively or you can make them if you are handy with metal work. For safety purposes stick with shackles that are no more than 2 inches longer than stock ( this will give you 1 inch of lift )
You can also use a body lift. A body lift simply replaces the mounts that attach the body to the frame with larger ones. Body lifts can usually be found for under $100 and are easy to install. Body lifts do not increase the overall ground clearance of your jeep because the only lift the body and not the frame, but they do allow room to fit larger tires without rubbing.
A common method to fit larger tires is cut wheel wells and fender flares, by doing this you can fit bigger tires and still have enough clearance ti not rub the wheel wells.
