How to Boot a Computer If You Forgot Your Password

Booting a computer where you are effectively locked out of the machine might seem like an impossible task, but it can be accomplished with a little computer savvy on your part. The password settings for your computer are stored on a small chip located on the motherboard, known as the BIOS (basic input-output system). Clearing the BIOS through the use of the attached motherboard jumper will reset the system password, granting you access to your computer.

Instructions

Remove the side of the case using a Phillips screwdriver. Take out the two screws located on the rear right-hand side of the case, after which the side should easily slide backwards, then out. Place the case side on a nearby table and place the screws on the case panel for safekeeping.

Consult your computer operating manual to locate the appropriate jumper to reset the BIOS. This will vary from model to model, but it will typically be located toward the bottom of the motherboard near the front of the case. The jumper will appear to be three pins sticking out of the motherboard in a row, with a plastic "jumper" positioned over two of them.

Pull the jumper off of the motherboard using your fingers or a pair of tweezers, replacing it over the pins that correspond with the "reset" setting as denoted by your instruction manual. Leave the jumper over the "reset" pins for 30 seconds, then place it back in its original position---this will be sufficient to clear the BIOS and reset the password.

Tips & Warnings

  • Be sure your computer is fully shut down and disconnected from the wall before opening the case.
