How to Use Electric Grooming Clippers
Electric grooming clippers allow you to trim an animal's fur to a uniform length--and fur clipping is generally much quicker and safer than scissoring. Using clippers at home can help you save money spent at grooming shops, though you may need practice with the clippers to achieve the desired haircut. Clipper blade sizes and blade detachment procedures can vary between manufacturers, but using grooming clippers of any brand is a straightforward process. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- Clipper blades
- Plastic comb attachments
- Slicker brush
- Clipper blade disinfectant
- Lubricating oil
Instructions
-
-
1
Read the user manual enclosed with your clippers to familiarize yourself with its various parts and maintenance needs.
-
2
Select a blade or blade attachment to suit the desired fur length. Use the metal blade that accompanied the clippers for the shortest cut, or attach one of the plastic comb attachments to the blade for a longer cut. Note that longer combs or a lower blade number will leave longer fur (See Reference 1). Consider using metal blades of different sizes rather than the plastic attachments if the fur is thick or difficult to comb.

-
3
Brush the fur with a slicker brush to remove any tangles and to smooth the clipping process. Ensure the fur is dry, because wet fur can damage the clipper blades or result in an uneven cut.
-
4
Turn the power on and run the clippers through the fur with the flat, broad portion of the clipper blade facing the animal's body. Clip with the grain of the fur for standard clipping or run them against the grain for a slightly shorter cut.
-
5
Brush any fur from the clipper blades after use---and during grooming as needed---with the small brush that accompanied the clippers. Point the clippers downward with the power off and gently sweep out the fur from between the blade teeth.
-
6
Spray the detached blade with clipper disinfectant after use and place a drop or two of lubricating oil on the blade prior to its next use. Use oil that accompanied the clippers or buy the oil recommended for your specific brand of clippers.
