How to Calculate Cardinal Directions From Your House
While most people know that the sun rises in the East and sets in the West, you need more than just this general information to determine the precise cardinal points of a compass, which can be essential in spell workings. Some spells call for you to face East and work best when followed exactly. At other times, such as a Circle or ritual, you will need to know the four points for accurate calling of the Guardians. Once determined for a particular location, these points will never change.

Go to the area that you need to plot. If you are making this determination for a ritual, go to that site. If you are plotting the points for your home, stand in the middle of it.

Use the compass. The arrow on a compass always points North, but tap it lightly to make sure it spins freely. The direction of the arrow is North. Place a stone or other marker there. From there you can follow the compass directions for East, South and West. Mark them for rituals, as well.

Mark the points inside your home. To mark North you may wish to use a plant, which is symbolic of earth, the traditional meaning of North. For East, it's traditional to use a feather or some other symbol of air. South is generally the realm of fire, so a candle would be appropriate. For West, a fountain symbolizing water would be fine.
