How to Clean RV Tank Sensors

Your recreational vehicle (RV) is a miniature house on wheels. The vehicle contains its own water and waste-water system. The system consists of a set of plastic tanks that hold fresh water and waste water. These tanks contain sensors that transmit information to you, via an on-board display, about the level of fresh water and waste water present in the individual tanks. Over time, the sensors become dirty. This can lead to inaccurate readings and sensor failure. To clean your RV tank sensors, you don't need a harsh cleaner or to take your RV into a repair shop.

Instructions

    • 1

Drive your RV to an RV park, campground or other area containing an RV waste station hook up.

    • 2

Connect the tanks (gray and black) on your RV to the RV waste station connections to drain the tanks of water and waste. Use a wrench, if needed, to detach the hoses. Wear latex gloves to keep your hands from getting wet.

    • 3

Disconnect the tank's hoses from the RV waste station after the tanks are empty. Secure the hoses to your RV.

    • 4

Use a water hose to fill both tanks 1/3 full with clean water.

    • 5

Add a half cup of regular dishwashing detergent to both the toilet and kitchen sink in your RV. The toilet drains into the black tank. The kitchen sink is connected to the gray tank.
Use a regular detergent, not one with lotion or other additives. These may interfere with the tanks and the attached hoses.

    • 6

Flush the toilet and run the sink for four to five minutes to flush the soap into the tanks.

    • 7

      Drive your RV.

    • 8

Stop at an RV drain station and drain the tanks.

    • 9

Repeat steps at least three times to fully clean the tank sensors.

Tips & Warnings

  • Clean the RV tank sensors regularly if you use your RV for frequent travel.
