How to Fix Voice Chat in Yahoo! Messenger

Yahoo! Messenger Voice Chat issues occur for various reasons: incorrect Yahoo! Messenger “Calling & Audio” settings; damaged, broken or poorly connected hardware (microphone/speakers); or use of an operating system incompatible or corrupted version of Yahoo! Messenger. Once you’ve discovered the source of your Yahoo! Messenger Voice Chat issue, fixing it isn’t difficult. Yahoo! supplies users with a wide variety of tools to fix voice chat issues, including hardware testing applications and online updates.

  • Click "Minimum System Requirements for Voice Chat" (see Resources below for a link) to confirm that your equipment supports Yahoo! Voice Chat. If it does, open and sign in to Yahoo! Messenger unless it automatically signs in. If you're using Vista and Yahoo! Messenger 9.0 or earlier, go to Step 7 after opening your messenger.

  • Go to the "Preferences" window to confirm your "Calling & Audio" setup. Click "Messenger > Preferences" or use the keyboard shortcut "Ctrl," "Shift" and "P" to the window.

  • Confirm the settings. Choose "Calling & Audio" on the "Category: " sidebar list. Check that the "Microphone," "Speakers" and "Ringer" drop-down menus have your hardware highlighted. If not, select your hardware and then click "OK" to save the settings. If you still have voice chat problems, go to Step 4.

  • Use the "Yahoo! Call Setup Assistant" to fix Yahoo! voice chat. Go to "Actions > Call Setup" in Yahoo! Messenger.

  • Test your microphone. Select your hardware from the "Choose the microphone you want to use" drop-down menu if not highlighted on the screen and read the sentence provided. If your microphone works, the colored dots light up on the screen when you speak. Click “Next” to go to the “Speakers Setup” section.

If your microphone doesn't work, check the connections to your computer or power source and try again. If you continue to have microphone issues, test your microphone using another chat or voice/audio program. If your microphone works in another program, go to Step 7. If it doesn’t work, replace your microphone.

  • Listen for music when the "Speakers Setup" section opens. If you hear music, click "Finish" and your voice chat should work. If voice chat doesn't work, go to Step 7.

If you didn't hear music, check the connections to your speakers and/or power source. Check that you've turned on the speakers with the volume turned up. Also, move the volume control slider on the volume control bar on the setup screen to the right. In addition, check that Yahoo! Messenger has your speaker highlighted in the "Choose the speaker you want to use" drop-down menu. If your speakers still don't work, continue to Step 7.

  • Check for Yahoo! Messenger updates as your voice chat issues may result from a known voice chat issue that Yahoo! has fixed with a newer version of Yahoo! Messenger. For example, voice chat doesn't work in older versions of Yahoo! Messenger in Windows Vista (initial 9.0 version and earlier). Click "Help > Check for Updates."

If Yahoo! offers an update in the browser window that opens, click "Update Now" and follow the instructions. If not, continue to Step 8.

  • Try Yahoo! Messenger Voice Chat again. If you continue to have issues, contact Yahoo! for assistance (see Resources) using Yahoo!'s webform. Disregard the version of Yahoo! Messenger displayed in the "Technical Support" link title as you can enter your version of Messenger in the provided drop-down menu on the webform.
