How to Check Your Minutes With Your Phone

Cell phone overages can be costly, with providers charging several cents a minute for extra talk time. For those with pre-paid plans, running out of minutes equals a silent phone until they can purchase a refill. Luckily, it's possible to check phone minutes in order to avoid an unwelcome surprise. One of the easiest ways to monitor your talk time is through the phone itself, since most carriers have tooled their products for instant account access. Follow these tips to keep your minutes firmly in hand.

  • Check your phone's phonebook for a minute monitor listing. Often, there will be a listing titled "check minutes." Press the call button to connect with this service, or to run the network function that will pull up usage.

  • Use your phone's proprietary browser service to access your account and look at usage. For example, T-Mobile's T-Zones mobile web contains a listing for account information. From there, it's possible to check both minute and text message use.

  • Call customer service from your phone. For some networks, the Customer Care number is 611, though it may differ from service to service. From there, ask the operator for minute status. Alternately, the automated answering service may report usage information at the beginning of any customer service call.

  • Check the system or settings menu for a call information function. This option will tell you the precise amount of minutes used on the phone that month. Keep in mind, however, that the carrier may round minutes up, charging a slightly higher amount than listed.
