How to File for the Home Heating Credit

The Home Heating Credit is a form of government assistance available to low-income residents of the state of Michigan. The Home Heating Credit is funded by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program. If you qualify for the Home Heating Credit, you will be eligible for a refund based on your home's heating costs for the previous year. Should you qualify, the amount you receive will vary depending on the number of people living in your home.

Things You'll Need

  • MI-1040CR-7 claim form
  • Verify that your income level falls within the allowable range to qualify for the Home Heating Credit. You can check this information by requesting a Michigan1040CR-7: Home Heating Credit pamphlet from your local Department of Human Resources. You may also access the pamphlet online at michigan.gov/taxes. Tables A and B on page 15 outline the income levels available to qualify.

  • Fill out a MI-1040CR-7 claim form. This form will be included with your information packet. If you opt to access the Home Heating Credit information packet online, select “MI-1040CR-7, Home Heating Credit Claim” and download the actual claim form (see Resources).

  • Fill out Michigan Form 3174, Direct Deposit of Refund to have the tax refund deposited directly into your checking account. Attach the completed Form 3174 to the MI-1040CR-7 claim form.

  • Mail your completed claim form and Form 3174 to the Michigan Department of Treasury, Lansing, Michigan 48956 by the cutoff date. This date changes each year, but will appear at the bottom of the MI-1040CR-7 claim form.

Tips & Warnings

  • You do not need to file an income tax return to qualify for the Home Heating Credit.
  • If you qualify for the Home Heating Credit, you may qualify for other energy assistance programs as well, such as shut-off protection or the Winter Protection Plan.
