Decks are framed out using posts and beams. It is not a difficult process to attach these two types of wooden boards together, but it does take some knowledge and has to be done correctly if you do not want your deck to fall apart. If the process is done correctly, your post and beam will be connected forever.
Things You'll Need
- Carriage bolts
- Drill bit
Determine where you would like to attach the beam to the post and mark the spot. Choose a spot in your post large enough to accommodate your beam. The beam will rest in a notch removed from the top of the post. The bolts will go into the side of the beam and out of the other side of the post.
Cut the marked area on the post out with a sawzall.
Place the beam on the notch in your post that you just cut. Pound a nail through the beam into the post to hold it in place.
Drill a hole through the beam and the post.
Push a carriage bolt through the hole. If the bolt will easily slide through, simply pound it through with a hammer. Once the bolt is through, place a washer and a nut on and tighten it into place. Repeat the process to place another carriage bolt. You will want two carriage bolts securing the beam to the post.
