How to Update an iMac

If you have switched from a Windows-based computer to an iMac, you may be wondering how to keep the software up to date with new features and security fixes as they become available. Updates are received via the Apple Software Update utility, which checks the Internet for updates once every week. However, you may wish to run the update utility manually to receive updates more quickly. Update your iMac automatically or manually using the Apple Software Update utility.

  • Click the Apple icon, then click "Software Update." Alternatively, click the Apple icon, then click "System Preferences" and "Software Update."

  • Click the "Update Now" button. The Software Update utility will scan for any new updates that are available, then display a list of each one.

  • Place a check in the box next to each update that you would like to download and install.

  • Click the "Install" button. To continue, you will need to enter the administrator password for your iMac.

  • Restart the iMac after the updates are finished being installed.
