Preparation
-
1
Visit an unfinished furniture store or arts and crafts store and purchase unfinished wood cubes. Typical sizes are single, double, triple and quadruple cubes. Buy as many as needed to build your desired cube furniture piece.
-
2
Use wood filler to repair nail holes or gaps in the wood. Gently sand the cubes with a low-grade sandpaper to create a rough surface for better paint adherence. Wipe off sanding residue.
-
-
3
Apply two coats of paint, allowing appropriate dry time in between. After the paint is dry, lightly sand the edges for a rustic, shabby chic look or leave as-is for a modern, sleek finish.
Craft Storage Workstation
-
4
Purchase and cut a piece of laminated wood to the size of 30 inches by 48 inches. Many hardware stores will cut the wood for you. Attach laminated edging around the perimeter of the laminated wood to cover the exposed cut areas. The edging can be found in the same hardware store aisle as the laminated wood and comes with application directions.
-
5
Place four 2-cube units upright and place the laminated wood on top to create a table. Face the open cubes outward to use as storage. Use a drill and screws to attach the table top surface to the cubes. Drill up from the inside of the cube into the bottom of the laminated table top.
-
6
Add a couple of chairs or stools to the workstation. Fill the cubes with colorful baskets and glass jars to store clutter and keep craft supplies in place.
Mudroom or Entryway Bench with Storage
-
7
Place two 4-cube units, one unit on top of the other, so the finished product is a two by four cube configuration. Attach them together from the inside with screws.
-
8
Place the cube organizer against the wall so it is four cubes long and two cubes high.
-
9
Utilize the lower cubes for shoes and boots. Place wicker baskets in the upper cubes to hold mudroom clutter. Toss a couple of pillows on top and use as seating for putting on shoes.
Wall Storage Unit
-
10
Measure the room and select enough cubes to build an entire wall of storage.
-
11
Configure the cubes and attach them to each other with screws from the inside. Attach the entire unit to the wall into studs for extra stability.
-
12
Store books, picture frames, office supplies, toys and decorative knick-knacks in the cubes. Consider this configuration for a playroom, kids' bedroom, home office or library.
