How to Play Nintendo DS Games on a PC ROM

While Nintendo's DS portable entertainment system is a hugely popular hand-held game device, you may wish to play Nintendo DS games on the larger screen of your PC as well. The graphics of Nintendo DS games can be enjoyed in enlarged form on PC, with sound played through speakers and a mouse used to simulate the DS's touch screen. This is all possible through ROM emulation, which is performed with easily downloaded files from the Internet.

Instructions

    • 1

Download and install a Nintendo DS emulator. This is the software that allows your PC to mimic the functionality of a Nintendo DS. A link to the download page for one popular Nintendo DS emulator has been provided in the References section, but be aware that you may need to experiment with different emulators to find the best software for your computer.

    • 2

Download ROM files for your Nintendo DS emulator. These are the data files for your emulator that simulate the software of an actual Nintendo DS. Place these ROM files in a directory convenient to your Nintendo DS emulator software. One directory of Nintendo DS ROM files has been provided in the Resources section.

    • 3

Use the "Open" command in the emulator's "File" menu to open and run ROM files. Use your keyboard to mimic the direction pad and action buttons of a Nintendo DS, or use a PC compatible joypad via USB to more closely mimic the button layout of the console. Your mouse is used to mimic the touch screen functionality.

Tips & Warnings

  • To play games that require microphone input, you will need a microphone connected or built into your PC.

  • Most ROM files are provided compressed as ZIP or RAR archives. You will need to decompress these files before your emulation software will recognize them.

  • It is illegal to use ROM files for commercial software you do not own. These methods use software that has been developed to serve the home DS development community, not to encourage piracy.
