How to Use a Safety Wire Twister
A safety wire twister, or safety wire pliers, is a tool used to rapidly and consistently twist and secure safety wire. Used in aviation and racing, safety wire secures fasteners to prevent them from becoming loose. Safety wire is available in various types and weights. The thinner wire can be twisted by hand; heavyweight safety wire requires the use of a wire twister. A wire twister is a three-function pliers that holds, twists and cuts.

Loop the safety wire through the fastener--nut or bolt--using extra wire to reach the stabilizing unit.

Loop the safety wire through the hole in the fastener clockwise so that the fastener cannot loosen. Pull the wire tightly in the direction of the second bolt or stabilizing unit.

Twist the two ends of safety wire twice. Bring the two ends together and clip the safety wire twister onto the wires next to the point where they will meet the fastening unit. The two safety wire ends will be next to each other in the safety wire twister jaws.

Pull the twist knob on the safety wire twister, holding the pliers to prevent them from twisting backwards. Let the twist knob retract. Do not over-twist or the safety wire may weaken or break.

Unclip the safety wire twister, thread one wire end through the fastening unit, loop the other wire end around the fastening unit, start a twist by hand and repeat the safety wire twister procedure.

Cut the wire, leaving about 1/4 inch, or three twists. Crimp the ends and tuck the safety wire around the fastening unit.

Tips & Warnings
Lubricate the spiral of the safety wire twister occasionally. Reversible safety wire twisters have both right and left twist capabilities.
Always wear goggles when using safety wire twisters. The cushioned grips on safety wire twisters are not insulated so they are not appropriate for electrical work.
