How to Fix an XBox 360 When It Freezes

Xbox 360 gamers covet their system's graphics engine, variety of games and online goodies available through the Marketplace. Every once in a while, the famed (and dreaded) "red ring of death," an lighted electronic indicator on the system, appears to indicate an internal hardware failure. There are times when the red lights don't appear and the Xbox freezes, leaving a stagnant picture on the TV and a frustrated gamer in its wake.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the console and wait two or three minutes. Restart the Xbox and restart the game. If this was the first instance of freezing, the error may have been a fluke and may not happen a second time. No further action is needed if this is the case.

    • 2

Press the "Guide" button on the controller to return to the Xbox 360 Dashboard, then press the Y button. If you're able to do this, the problem may be with the game disc and not the system itself. Eject the game and inspect it for posible scratches in the disc's bottom surface.

    • 3

Turn off and unplug the system, and move it to a better-ventilated area. The Xbox might need to "breathe" better. It might also be experiencing interference from other electrical devices.

    • 4

Log on to your gamer profile and purge the hard drive cache of any unsaved data. The freeze may occur as a result of loading too much data, so unloading the hard drive may resolve the issue.

Tips & Warnings

  • If none of these corrects the issue, contact Microsoft Customer Support. You may need to register your console prior to servicing.

  • Do not try open the console to inspect the hardware. This will void any current warranty and may damage internal components.
