How to Stop a Cat From Chewing a Christmas Tree

Cats love to chew. During the Christmas season families are busy putting up Christmas trees and decorating them. It isn't long before the families notice that their cats are chewing away at the Christmas tree. It doesn't matter whether the Christmas tree is real or artificial. This chewing can ruin branches, ornaments and even lead to the Christmas tree falling over. There are some things you can do to stop your cat from chewing on the Christmas tree.

Instructions

    • 1

Place some rubbing alcohol in an empty spray bottle and spray the bottom branches of the Christmas tree. Cats will take one bite of this and run away. If the taste is horrible to cats, they won't continue the behavior.

    • 2

Wrap pieces of aluminum foil around the base of your Christmas tree. Add some to a few of the bottom branches. Cats don't like this and will stay away.

    • 3

Use your leftover soapy water from washing the dishes and place it in a spray bottle. Squirt your tree with this. Cats don't like it and will stop chewing the minute they take their first bite. You will only need to squirt the lower half of your tree where your cat is likely to strike first.

    • 4

Place a motion sensor under or near the Christmas tree. The motion sensor should emit a loud noise every time your cat comes near it. This will scare the cat and keep it away from the Christmas tree.

    • 5

Coat several strips of double-sided tape with cayenne pepper. Hang them from the bottom of the tree. Cats hate cayenne pepper and will avoid the Christmas tree.

Tips & Warnings

  • Purchase a product called "NO." It can safely be used on Christmas trees and deters cats from chewing on them.

  • Leave some toys or food items around the house that the cat can chew on. The cat may then be less likely to chew on the Christmas tree.

  • Don't give your cat attention when it is chewing on your Christmas tree. Sure, the cat looks cute under there, but you will only be reinforcing the bad behavior.

Try deterring the cat with smell instead of taste. By the time he is tasting it, it can already be too late. Keep Away works to keep them away from the tree by producing a smell that is offensive to them but smells like mint to us.
