How to Cover an RV Roof
Your RV is your home away from home on those long road trips. However, you need to make sure your vehicle is adequately protected when it is not in use. One of the most important structural parts of the RV is the roof. You will want to cover your RV roof against weather and sun damage. Otherwise, you might face expensive repairs that will reduce the life of the vehicle. By taking time to figure out a good storage situation for your RV, you can preserve your RV roof with a minimum of fuss. As an RV owner, it is crucial you take care of your equipment so that it can be used for years to come.

Covering the RV Roof
-
1
Stretch a large plastic tarp on the lawn next to where the RV will be parked when not in use. Visually inspect the tarp for tears or other damage that will allow water to collect underneath. Using a damaged tarp can result in stagnant water that damages the RV roof.
-
2
Place the tarp over the top of the RV. You may need a partner and a ladder to make sure this is properly done; remember to exercise caution as you slip the tarp over the roof, remaining aware of sharp edges that are liable to snag and possibly tear the plastic. Pull down firmly on all sides once the tarp is in place to make sure it it completely snug.

3
Attach bungee cords to the corner grommets of the tarp and secure the other end of the cords to anchor points on the RV like the fender or wheel wells. Work in a diagonal pattern anchoring the cords to the RV, moving from back right to front left, etc.
-
4
Continue to anchor the remaining bungee cords along the front, back and sides. Using eight cords will provide a tight fit that will stand up even in stormy weather and high winds. The tightness of the fit is what guarantees waterproofing over long periods of time.
-
5
Check the anchor points and the fabric itself for damage approximately once a month. This does not need to be terribly detailed. A simple walk around and visual inspection will be enough to make sure no problems have cropped up that need immediate attention.
