How to Replace the Power Supply for an Arcade Machine

Over time, parts on everything wear down, burn out or simply fail. Electronics are no different and arcade machine power supplies fall into this category. They are electronic and generally built with some of the highest quality components available, since they need to be able to work for long hours day after day. Eventually, they fail and need replacement.

Instructions

  1. Replacement and Testing

    • 1

Loosen the screws holding the supply wires to the power supply. Note the placement of each wire, and then remove them from the power supply.

    • 2

Unscrew the four mounting screws on the failed power supply and remove it. Line up the new power supply with the existing mounting holes.

    • 3

Replace the mounting screws. Tightening them only to hand tight, so as not to strip out the mounting holes. Plug the PSU into a wall outlet. Get the multimeter ready. Set it to detect VDC, or volts direct current.

    • 4

Place the tip of the black lead between the screw marked GRD on the PSU and the protective tabs between the wire posts. Placed properly, it will stay in place making contact with the screw. Now, touch the red lead to the +5v post. Your multimeter should read 5v even. Do the same with the +12v post. If these values read more or less than exactly the right voltage, then you need to adjust the voltage gain via the knob on the new PSU. It should only take small movements to bring change. Keep testing and adjusting gain until your voltages read 5v and 12v exactly, or as close as you can get to those values.

Unplug the PSU from the wall. Loosen the wire mounting screws as necessary, and connect each wire to its respective post, tightening the mounting screws as you go. Once you have all of the wires connected and hand tight, your machine will be ready for action.
