How to Avoid Infecting Your Computer Before Installing an Antivirus Program
If you have bought a new computer or restored an operating system back to factory settings, there may be tasks you need to complete before downloading an anti-virus program. Re-installing all your programs can be time consuming, so downloading virus protection software probably isn't at the top of your list of priorities. Without an anti-virus program you computer will be vulnerable to infection from malicious software, but there are temporary actions you can take to keep your operating system safe.

Disconnect your computer from its Internet connection so that no virus files can be installed on your hard drive. Disconnect your system's Ethernet cable or turn off your wireless router to prevent your system from accessing the Internet.

Restart the computer. Press the "F8" key, or whichever key your operating system uses to access the Safe Mode menu. Highlight "Safe Mode" and press "Enter" to prevent any virus files on your system from opening themselves.

Check the senders of any emails stored on your computer before opening the email attachments. Do not open the attachments if you don't personally know the sender.

Do not open or run any files from burned data CDs or USB memory drives before installing an anti-virus program.

Download and install the most recent version of your web browser if you must connect to the Internet prior to installing an anti-virus program. Install a software firewall such as "Zone Alarm" or "Ashampoo" to prevent anyone from accessing your computer and installing a virus.

Access your operating system's update feature and download the latest service pack if you need to be connected to the Internet before installing the anti-virus program. Click "Start," then "All Programs," then "Windows Update." Select "Search For Updates," then "Install."
