How to Create Links to Google Maps

Google Maps is an online service that provides an interactive map of the Earth. Google Maps offers satellite views in addition to street and terrain maps. In Google Maps, you can zoom in and out, search for addresses and businesses, get driving directions, and view information, street level photos, and videos of places on the map. The Link tool provides the web address to link to a map, code for embedding a map on a web page, and embedded map customization.

Instructions

    • 1

Open your Web browser and go to the Google Maps website.

    • 2

Click the arrows on the pan tool in the upper left corner, or click-and-drag the map until it shows the location you want to link to on the map.

    • 3

Right-click on the location and select "Center Map."

    • 4

Click the plus sign "+" on the zoom bar on the left side of the screen to zoom in on the location. Center the map again if necessary to keep the exact location you want centered. Keep zooming in and out and centering until you have the view you want.

    • 5

Click on the "Map," "Satellite," and "Terrain" buttons to see what each of these map types look like. Click the map type you want for your link.

    • 6

Click the "Link" button in the upper right corner. A small window opens containing the map Web address and embedding code.

    • 7

Click in the "Paste link in email or IM" box to select the contents.

    • 8

Select "Copy" from the "Edit" menu. The link is ready to be pasted into your document or message.

    • 9

Go to the application you want to use the link in and paste the link using the "Paste" command in the "Edit" menu.

Tips & Warnings

  • Find places by searching for the address or business name. Click on the place marker (upside down teardrop) and select "Zoom Here" from the pop-up menu on the map. The place information will be included in the link you create and copy.

  • Use the "Get Directions" feature to get directions between two, or more, locations. Zoom, pan and choose the map type to create the view you want. The directions can be modified by clicking on the route and dragging it. The map link will take visitors to the same view, including the destinations, directions and any route changes you made.
