How to Measure for a Thumb Brace

Many problems can plague the thumb. Arthritis, tendonitis, nerve impingement and sprains are just a few examples of thumb problems that can require the use of a brace. Thumb problems can easily result from overuse in the workplace, especially in the fast-paced computer world we live in. Thumb pain can often be relieved by wearing a thumb brace. If properly measured for, a thumb brace can reduce inflammation and limit painful joint movement, getting you on a road to speedy recovery.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure around the knuckle of the thumb with a measuring tape and record this measurement. This is a circumference measurement taken around the thumb for which the brace is intended.

    • 2

Take a length measurement from the distal (far) end of your thumb to the wrist. This measurement will determine what length you will need. Ideally the brace should encompass the knuckle, leaving a small amount of the fingernail exposed.

    • 3

Measure the circumference of the wrist with a tape measure to determine how the brace will fit around your wrist. If swelling is present, account for any changes in diameter that may occur in the time you will be wearing the brace.

    • 4

Calculate the circumference from the inner space of your thumb to the wrist by measuring across your palm. This will determine how the brace will fit from your palm to wrist. The brace should fit snug and comfortably.

    • 5

Locate the chart on the back of the thumb brace box and match the measurements you made with the box's measurements. The chart will tell you what size will fit best. If possible, try the brace on to assure proper fit.

Tips & Warnings

  • Consult a doctor to determine if a brace is the best option for curing your problem.
