How to Convert a CD to an MP3 in Ubuntu

It can be frustrating to keep track of a stack of audio CDs, especially when using a computer whose hard drive size is measured in the hundreds of gigabytes. Fortunately, audio CDs can be converted to MP3 format for easy storage and playback of their content with free and open-source tools. On Ubuntu Linux, Grip is a popular choice.

Instructions

  1. Procedure

    • 1

Install Grip on your computer (see Resources). Using the graphical interface, start the "Ubuntu Software Center" application and type "grip" into the search box in the upper-right corner. Click the "Install" arrow next to the description of the Grip mp3 converter. "Installing Software in Ubuntu" in the References section provides step-by-step screenshots.

    • 2

Run Grip. The Ubuntu system will have added Grip to your "Programs" menu under "Sound and Video." Start it up.

    • 3

Insert your audio CD into the drive. Grip will automatically detect your CD and try to download a list of track names.

    • 4

Tell Grip to convert ("rip") your CD to MP3 format. Make sure there is a check mark in the "Rip" column next to all tracks that you want to convert to MP3s. You can also select all tracks by clicking the word "Rip" itself. Then click the "Rip" tab, then the "Rip+Encode" button. This will extract the audio tracks from your CD and convert them to MP3 format. This may take a while, depending on how fast your computer is.
