Creating Your First Article
-
1
Search Wikipedia to be sure your article idea is new. With over 3 million articles in its database, the website requires that new writers check for a variety of titles that may apply to the topic to avoid duplication. If no related articles come up in your search, you will be given the option to "create a new page."
-
2
Register for an account with Wikipedia. Only registered users may create pages on the website. This new page will include a link to opening an account or logging in under your existing user name.
-
-
3
Gather your facts and references materials for the topic. Wikipedia advises against including websites as references that do not have editorial control. These include personal websites, self published books, social media pages, etc. An example of a good reference is a online newspaper or government website. Link the references for your article with your page.
-
4
Write a thorough article requesting feedback along the way. As a registered user, you have your own user space. Wikipedia recommends beginning a draft for your new article in your user space on a sub page as you can take your time and ask other editors to help work on it.

5
After you have entered your article, click Show preview to check for errors, then click Save page.

Tips & Warnings
Remember to search Wikipedia thoroughly for your desired topic. With so many contributors, most relevant, fact-based information has already been included in the database.
Articles must have a neutral tone and be based on existing facts--not opinions of the writer.
